Natural Skincare: Product Swaps
Greenwashing. It's a real thing and it's sometimes really difficult to spot -- brands like Kiehls, Origins & Lush (that I was a longtime user of) are culprits! Target just introduced a new natural line to their end caps called "Love, Beauty & Planet" but the second ingredient in many of their products is Sodium Laureth Sulfate! Their products also contain "fragrance"! Your skin is your largest organ and what you put on it can have some serious side effects. Just because it contains natural ingredients, does not make the product natural!
Speaking of Kiehl's, I was a big supporter of them until recently. Although they seem like they have clean(er) ingredients than other brands, their products have tons of hidden chemicals! The good for you skin ingredients they put on their packaging (avocado oil, etc.) fall further down on the list, meaning theres not much of them in there. Here are the common chemicals I found after reading the back of their labels.
Fragrance: this can mean anything. Just because a chemical is not listed in their ingredients, doesn't mean it's not there! Fragrance is their way of keeping their proprietary recipe secret.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): present in so many of their products! They are possible hormone disruptors & should be avoided.
Parabens: Really? I've seen propylparaben and methylparaben in many of their products. Some of the most toxic substances found in beauty products. They have been linked to certain cancers.
So many other chemicals found. Take a look at the ingredient list for their top selling moisturizer (that I used to use!):

I'm having a tough time because my hair is thick and wavy! I will report back on what I find for haircare. You can find my entire routine under the shop section: beauty faves on my blog! I'm happy with the direction that the beauty industry is moving but we still have a lot of work to do!
